Remember that kits or prefab structures that you think have DIY capabilities are actually not that simple. Many prefab pergolas are cheaper at first and may seem more attractive than building to order, but they require professional help to install, which adds to the overall cost.

We think of pergolas as falling into two big buckets: traditional and modern. In short, traditional pergolas have decorative flowers, modern ones do not.
