Gable Pergola is available in heights of 10′ to 60′ and widths of 8′ to 20′. These measurements indicate the overall dimensions of the roof. Standard overhang is 12″.

Fiberglass pergolas have a smooth surface and a more refined appearance than wood. Like us, fiberglass can be taken in any paint color, but looks best in modern versus traditional landscape designs. One benefit of fiberglass over wooden pergolas is that they are extremely durable and virtually maintenance free.

Because fiberglass is so strong, it can span longer distances than wood—up to 26 feet in some cases, which is useful for reducing poles as a barrier to outdoor spaces.

Aluminum pergolas have advantages very similar to fiberglass – they are light, strong, smooth and suitable for modern styles and require almost no maintenance.  Aluminum pergolas are rust-resistant and are usually powder-coated, so that the paint color does not fade with wear.

Vinyl pergolas are the lowest choice when it comes to materials. They also have a lower quality appearance because the surface appears to be made of wood, fiberglass or metal. Another potential disadvantage is that vinyl pergolas are usually limited in color – you will find them in white or light neutral colors.

Although vinyl pergolas are low maintenance, they are not as durable as wood, fiberglass or metal. If longevity or design flexibility isn’t important to you, but price is, a vinyl pergola might be the way to go. However, there are other inexpensive options to consider.

Anchor to the ground. For most pergolas, this means making underground concrete legs for each post, although lighter sets are sometimes simply attached to existing decking or concrete.

The attached posts must be perfectly vertical with proper spacing to match the precast joists – if you are half an inch off you will need to reattach the posts. For this reason, we usually recommend having a contractor install your pergola, even with multiple pergola kits. Contractor installation will likely cost between $3K and $6K on top of the purchase price of the pergola, but it’s usually worth it.

Sometimes pergolas require a permit, sometimes not. City code and, if applicable, HOA requirements will ultimately determine whether a permit is required.

A permit is more often required if pergolas are large, attached to existing structures, or use concrete foundations to anchor their posts to the ground. Areas that experience snow, high winds, or seismic activity may also require permits more often. Continuous roof construction more or less definitely requires a permit.

Prefabricated pergolas usually come with construction drawings that can be used when returning the pergola. This can create significant savings by reducing the cost and effort of hiring an engineer to create permit drawings.

Custom pergolas vary in cost based on material cost at the time, size, and anything else about your design that complicates installation. Complex or architecturally challenging designs can quickly accumulate costs with additional labor requirements.
