Pergola Entry – The owner purchased this one-story ranch home in Boulder’s Table Mesa neighborhood in 2020. Although they were pleased with the overall interior layout, they sought to reimagine the front and rear entrances to provide seating, shade, and improved curb appeal. After working with the Milton team, the homeowner now has an outdoor space that complements his lifestyle and adds value and visual interest to the home.

We moved the front door from the side to the front of the house to improve circulation and create a formal entry. The double-hinged front doors open wide to improve airflow and invite guests into the new foyer equipped with custom shelving and storage.

The most striking visual element of this new design is the custom pergola that creates a perfect shaded seating area for enjoying Colorado’s abundant blue skies. The angle of the pergola mirrors the slope of the house’s roof for visual continuity while natural wood tones provide a pop of color and contrast.

Raised flower beds lining the outdoor seating area create a special patio space and raise the garden to eye level for easy cultivation and a touch of privacy.

When the homeowner approached our team, his exterior was unattractive. The front of the house originally consisted of an entrance structure consisting of massive plaster columns topped by painted wooden beams. Since the structure matches the exterior of the house, there was no visual appeal to draw the eye. The massive columns also blocked the natural light, making the path look dark and enclosed.

Our team, determined to breathe new life into the exterior of the house, worked to design a completely new structure. We created a pergola from natural wood and paired it with a light concrete path. The Douglas fir structure contrasts beautifully with the exterior of the home to create a welcoming focal point. Thin columns allow plenty of natural light to warm the front entrance. Architectural details inside the house inspired handmade strips and dowels around the columns. These fun details give guests a sneak peek of what’s to come while creating a cohesive design inside and out.
