In addition to shopping our wide range of solar lights, check out our other lighting essentials to make sure you’re ready whatever the situation: we’ve been working hard outside over the weekend and it’s looking pretty cool! Some of you have asked about a yard tour this summer and I will do it as soon as I can. We’re really behind this year because we’re working on finishing big projects that only happen every few years (like painting decks and playsets). We still need to paint the siding on the house and then we will mulch, then I will definitely share with you! We have been working hard, but there is more to be done. Having outdoor spaces is wonderful, but a lot of work!
We used the backyard a lot this summer because it was so beautiful. We absolutely love it. A few weeks ago I shared with you our new outdoor dining area:
How To Make Sturdy Diy Patio Light Planters
I love the table top under the pergola. We use it a lot now and I love that we don’t have to worry about a wet pillow to enjoy it.
One of the little projects we got help with was one that I’ve been planning for a year because we added those pretty lights you see under the pergola over there. I’ve talked more about these lights here and they still hold up incredibly well, even in the winter. They are the best we have found and I highly recommend them. They are industrial quality — I see the same in restaurants all the time.
I bought three skeins last year and planned to use the third one for this project. I really wanted to string another set between the trees around our yard, but the river birch isn’t strong enough for those heavy lights. As I said, they are commercial grade, so the ropes are thick and can weigh down trees and break them, especially in stormy weather.
Five Pergola Lighting Ideas To Illuminate Your Outdoor Space
So we asked our guys who help us with the projects they recommended and this is what I had in mind – using wires. When I see these hanging on restaurant patios, they’re usually on wires. I believe it’s because they’re so heavy – if you just tension them, you’d pull too much on the string and be quite loose.
One end went into the pergola and then they strung it to our big trees out back. It was quite a long one – I’d say a good 15-20 yards of wire on the longest stretch? We have a lot of mature trees there and they don’t bend under the load. They also ran another wire to the large trees at the edge of the yard.
The lights could then be hung for purchase with zip ties – as long as you tighten them, the lights won’t move anywhere. Here’s a closer look at one corner:

I actually wanted a more “bent” look that we ended up with and was almost going to pull some of them out of the wire to give that look but decided against it. I think the more support the better, and the direct view has grown on me. I think it looks nice and they don’t mind.
If they couldn’t wire the big trees, I would have them put some poles in the ground, but that would be too much work. (You’ll have to dig up the cement and use it – but it’s an option if you don’t have strong trees.)
Sometimes you can see a lot of wires and sometimes you can barely see them. But I don’t mind them because they allow for a really fantastic space underneath. The first evening we sat under the lamp and laughed like little children because it was so beautiful. It’s crazy how wonderful it is.

I was going to take a picture of you under the lights, but we had a storm last night. If I get it tonight I can update it. For now, this is the final result from way back:
We have a lot of slope in our yard, so it was difficult to get high enough between the trees — so we got to work. This would be a very easy DIY project if you have a flat yard and something to attach the wires to.
Just when I think it can’t get any better here, it does! 🙂 They add so much atmosphere here, we love the look.
