Pergola Under Balcony – This article details how to build a simple DIY pergola on a concrete patio, with a modern wood paneled privacy wall!
Well, friends, if you are looking for an easy way to improve your home then DIY pergola is it! We (mainly my husband, ha) built this pergola on our concrete patio last summer and it was my favorite DIY project. It completely changes the look and feel of your backyard and patio space.
Pergola Under Balcony
It may sound scary but this project is really fun and I know how to improve the outdoor space. This easy DIY pergola can be done on a budget and works with a variety of styles.

Our house has a very small yard, and the houses are next to each other, so there is no life when we move. We live in a newly built community so the trees are still very small and do not provide shade or privacy.
Our backyard faces south, so it’s always sunny and warm in the summer. Without shadows it would be difficult to use this space. But with two young kids, I need a safe place to hang out with them!
The wind can also be very strong where we live, so we have a hard time finding shade solutions. We tried straw (with a very heavy base), a free-standing pergola (again heavy), and a shadeless pergola. Nothing can withstand the wind!
Deck Covers, Pergolas
We tried hard to find the best shade but no success. Looking back, I wish we had bitten the bullet and built the pergola right away. We tried three other ideas, and ended up saving hundreds of dollars, before deciding to learn how to build a pergola.
Building this DIY pergola on a concrete patio is a must! With the help of my brother-in-law, we were able to complete this project in two weeks! It went up faster than I expected, and it was very expensive to build!
This is a DIY project that I recommend to anyone who wants to add shade and privacy to their yard, while adding value to their home!
Fresco Covered Patio
EDIT March 2023: We moved in a few years ago and this pergola is what I miss most about this house! However, it definitely helped our house stand out when we went to sell it. Every guest we have commented on how much they loved the pergola! It adds so much to our little house. The back cover would be a good sell without it. But with that said, it was one of the highlights! So, if you want to increase the value of your home for sale, I highly recommend this project!

Before starting this pergola project, I did a lot of research! Always follow my entry into the search engine when starting a project!

I saw many different styles and sizes and ideas. Free standing pergola attached to the ground… Pergola has traditional design and modern style… Cedar and Redwood and Pressure Treated Wood…
I am also looking into different options. Some companies, like Home Depot, sell DIY Pergola kits where they will send you pre-cut pieces and you can put them together. Of course, they also offer pergola crafts.
I can tell you that the cost of paying for a professional installation would be at least 3x more than what we paid! Even the pre-cut material was very expensive.

Once we had a design idea in mind, we measured the patio space to determine how big we wanted the pergola to be, where we wanted to add a privacy wall, and how we wanted it to go.
We decided to cover all the posters. The concrete slab is 19′-6″ long x 10′-6″ wide.
We want the pergola roof to hang over our windows. The top of the window is 9′ tall.

After that, I painted how we want it to look. I drew the design and the length to measure. This way we can determine how many boards are needed and what type. Figuring out which order is the most important part of this project!
NOTE: We changed some dimensions / parts when we ordered the wood, I will see below.
Because we are looking for cedar, and a specific size, we ordered the following material from a local yard. By ordering from the yard and going to Home Depot, we can get the type of wood we want and the right size.

We were very happy because we were able to order the size of the frame for the required length and width. This saves us a lot of time and work after we receive the wood because we have to cut less.
It took about a week for the parts to arrive and we had them shipped to our home for a great price! Again… I highly recommend using local sites! You’re also supporting small businesses so it’s a win!
NOTE: we ended up using 1″ x 4″ boards for the privacy wall instead of 1″ x 6″, and left a 1″ gap between each board.
How Adding A Pergola Will Change Your Outdoor Living Space
The first step is to install the 3 6″ x 6″ posts on the concrete slab. This is a great episode! The wood is very heavy and requires 2-3 people to hold it to ensure it is level and straight.
After that, we put the big head in front. This is another part of the trick that takes two people. One person holds the tree up while the other enters the 6″ x 6″ space.
Also, you can see in the next photo, we found a place at the top of the 6″ x 6″ text for the vertical title.
All Decked Out
The next step is to install the support board and metal flashing on the house. Roofing is an important step to prevent water from collecting on the wood, which can damage the side of your house.
We decided not to seal or stain the cedar because we wanted it to age naturally. That old cedar gets old with time and I love the color change!
A little finishing touch we added the sun shade! We’ve added two of these outdoor shades, seen above, to help keep the sun at bay! Easy to use and doesn’t look too over the top. They also add a lot of privacy and when they are under this area they are like a private outdoor room.

We also added a large sun canopy to sleep on top of the pergola. They add a large shade, protection from the rain, and it’s invisible. We use a carabiner clip to attach it for easy removal in the winter. We remove them so that the snow does not collect them.
Now we’ve added outdoor globe lights to the line! I always like to see the lights! They smell magical and it’s perfect when we go out at night!
One thing to note is that we are not ready – the first few times the cedar wood gets wet (when it rains or snows) the dripping water can turn red and stain the material or concrete underneath. We can clean the head with a pressure washer, but that’s something we need to know!

If you close the wood this will not be a problem. Otherwise, I would recommend washing the wood with a pressure washer (a safe distance) once or twice before placing the furniture under it.
Yes, we have added the perfect patio furniture! I love our outdoor unit and what a great seating area! Our inventory is out of stock but this Wayfair outdoor unit is! Or this large outdoor unit looks great!
I am so happy with how our pergola and privacy wall turned out on our porch! This pergola adds so much to the look and feel of our yard!
Backyard Pergola And Gazebo Design Ideas
It gives us a lot of shade and mystery! I love how the concrete patio space now feels like an extension of our house and like an outdoor room. We use it all the time. It’s even better in the winter because it keeps the snow off the patio!
We hope these DIY Pergola plans help you if you want to build your own pergola on your patio! I highly recommend this project because it saved us a lot of money and it really wasn’t that hard to do! As long as you have some kids helping out
