The finished SPG 3.0 was full of plants on November 1st, the wettest weekend this fall.

Unfortunately we didn’t have time to paint the door trim, that’s a project for next year.

Summer in Portland, Oregon is a wonderful reward for a long, wet, gray and cold winter. Summer is hot and sunny (some say hot, and after record summer temperatures I agree). While many people think of the Pacific Northwest as “rainy all the time,” that’s not true. The modified Mediterranean climate means that the rain usually ends in May or June and does not return until October or November.

Our backyard is where I like to spend my summer days, surrounded by a collection of (now) potted vegetables; agave, aloes, yuccas, mangoes, various cacti and many others. My husband, Andrew, is not a fan of the sun, and knowing that it will be years before our Magnolia macrophylla grows, he designed a system to provide it. Originally called “shadow hut” – because it’s so nice to say – the name was changed to “shelter” when it was finished, it was too well made to be called a hut.

The first winter with the shade pavilion (2009) I decided to move some of my dry storage plants under it instead of in the dark garage. The first installation of the Shade Pavilion Greenhouse (SPG) – which went up in October 2010 – consisted of a roof made of rigid plastic sheets, with the sides and top of heavy plastic sheets wrapped in PVC pipes. The edge of the plastic cover was inserted into a metal tube designed for this purpose. Since the greenhouse roof was under the existing metal roof, we didn’t have to worry about snow or ice. It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done.

That first design went up every fall, and down every spring, for three years—until Andrew decided the plastic wrap was enough and needed to improve it.

Version 2.0, which was launched in the fall of 2013, is made of gold-colored plastic panels sandwiched, top and bottom, between two pieces of wood, which are joined together to hold the panels in place. The entire structure of the greenhouse is built from eight 2×4s that are bolted into place over the existing shade pavilion bolts, without screws or nails disturbing the existing structure. There is nothing – when the walls are down – to indicate that this is something other than a summer use system. That’s the genius of design, in my opinion.

The design has a few not so good elements, however, all easily solved, but those that make the SPG a little “unpolished”. For example, since the plastic sheets overlap, they are slightly open, so stick them on the front and back – with tape that does not leave any residue. There is also a small gap in the upper corner that we fill with a piece of felt to keep the heat inside.
